Blastoise: Base Set

from $50.00
Step into the world of classic Pokémon with Blastoise from the Base Set! This iconic card, featuring stunning artwork by Ken Sugimori, first debuted in the Japanese Expansion Pack. As one of the original powerhouse Pokémon, Blastoise is a fan-favorite for collectors and competitive players alike.Blastoise made a unique appearance in Trainer Deck B, with an exclusive red border and "Trainer Deck B" printed on the back of the card. These were distributed to prototype Pokémon Leagues prior to the official launch of the Pokémon TCG in North America, making them highly sought-after rarities in the Pokémon card community. In Japan, this card was released as an Unnumbered Promotional card featuring different artwork by the same legendary artist, Ken Sugimori. This promotional version was part of the Trade Please campaign that ran from February 10 to July 31, 1998. Participants of the campaign were invited to mail a flyer included with Trade Please copies and two Pokémon trading cards to MediaFactory, where they could choose from three available "courses." The "B Course" included this Blastoise card along with a Trade Please! card, adding even more exclusivity to this rare piece of Pokémon history.Following this, the Blastoise card was later included in the Intro Pack and reprinted as part of the Pokémon Song Best Collection CD, where it featured the Pikachu Records logo in place of the usual expansion symbol. The Base Set print of Blastoise was also reprinted in the Base Set 2 expansion and even made a return in the Celebrations expansion's Classic Collection for the Pokémon 25th Anniversary. This 25th Anniversary reprint features the iconic 25th Anniversary logo in the bottom right corner of the artwork and notably lacks Wizards of the Coast in the copyright information, further highlighting its place in Pokémon history. In Japan, this version was re-released as part of the Promo Card Pack 25th Anniversary Edition, which featured a red and gold “25th” logo on the artwork, adding to the nostalgic appeal. Both of these prints feature Confetti Holofoil and include etching similar to Full Art cards, making them visually stunning additions to any collection.Over the years, a few minor print variations have been observed, including cards missing the word "Stage" in the upper right corner of the text and others with a red ink dot above Hydro Pump’s Energy cost, adding intrigue to collectors. In the Pokémon games, Blastoise is known for its signature moves, including Rain Dance (introduced in Generation II) and Hydro Pump, which this card faithfully replicates. The English Pokédex entry on this card is derived from Pokémon Red and Blue, with slight rewording, while the Japanese entry comes from Pokémon Red and Green.Whether you're completing a nostalgic collection, adding a rare card to your deck, or simply appreciating one of the original Kanto starters in all its glory, this Blastoise card from the Base Set remains a true Pokémon TCG treasure.
